30 Years of Folk Art

Falmouth, Nova Scotia, Period 1991 – Mid-1995

I started painting in January of 1991. My intention was to paint only one thing. An old table with the image of a cutaway house interior. Much the way I liked to draw as a kid.

The intended only piece, 1991

But the little Muse of the Paintbrush had other ideas, and so for 30 years I’ve been playing with colour, whimsy, texture and narrative, oblivious to perspective, shadows, or rules of composition.

When I started painting I didn’t have a name for the kind of pieces I was creating. Because I  was painting on objects from the attic, and dipping into the attic of my mind for nostalgic scenes and romps with my imagination, I labeled what I was doing “Attic Art.” It was others who knew far more about art styles who identified my creations as “folk,” or “naïve, art.”

By the end of that first year, I had my first solo show, in Truro, Nova Scotia. Others followed.

ONTARIO PERIOD, Mid-2002  – January 2020

And on and on it went, with painting after painting. Including some that fell into themes.

Let’s look at more clotheslines.

A Very Different Theme

I got thinking about images that might pop into a head that misheard Old Testament Stories. Here’s what resulted.

An assortment of old watch faces inspired another theme.

I hope you’ve had fun scrolling through a few of my pieces from the last 30 years. Thanks for taking the time to look.
